Kirtan, also known as sankirtana is a form of chanting and singing the glories of God. A participatory musical experience with very positive energy, it helps us connect with the higher power, while at the same time helping us delve into our souls and experience a oneness with God. Hinduism has had a long and cherished history of this form of worship. Places like Pandharpur, Udupi have a long tradition of kirtankaaras in the form of various Dasas who eulogised Vitthala and Udupi Shri Krishna and composed several kirtans/bhajans.

While listening to NPR in Dallas, we heard an American Kirtan duo by the name of Jai Uttal and Krishna Das sing a kirtan eulogising Lord Shiva. It was during the lowest point in our lives that we discovered these kirtankaaras , and the peace and calm that their singing brought to our otherwise frayed and high strung nerves was unbelievable. We ended up owing all of their CDs and listening to it each day to calm us down.

Today, I present Krishna Das, who is in my opinion the best Kirtan exponent of American origin. He has 8 albums to his credit. He was nominated for the 2013 Grammy Awards for Best New Age album, and also performed at the Grammy Awards ceremony as well.
