One the occasion of Maha Shivarathiri, i share with you a song from the movie nAn Kadavul. Vaali's lyrics and Illayaraja's music help to make the song, in Vijay Prakash's voice, one of the most philosophical and powerful in recent times. Arthur C Wilson's camera and the way he portrays kaasi deserves special mention and a sample can be seen in this song.

Note: This song forms the crux of Sri Rudhra, a powerful set of hymns about Lord Siva, present in the Yajur vedha. There is a famous theory about Sri Rudhra given by the paramaacharya of kanchi, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya swami. Generally Vedhas are referred as 3 (trayee Veda). The Yajur Veda is in the middle. If we check what’s found in the middle of Yajur Veda, it’s the Rudhra hymns. They are present in the fourth chapter of the total seven chapters. If we further ponder in to what’s found in the middle of Rudhra, it’s the Name of lord Siva – famously called Siva Panchakshari (the 5 letters – Om nama Sivaya – in Sanskrit – given in the last line of the above present manthras). Hence, the hymns are very pious and should be treated with respect.

without much ado, the song 'Om sivoham Om sivoham, rudra nAmam bhajE' from the movie nAn kadavul. I have given below the lyrics and the meaning too

When Haripriya Sabasivam posted “Surangani” A few days back, the other one that immediately came to my mind was this peppy tamil folk song. Those were the days of DD and this lady was one of the most prominent faces and still remains the Pioneer of Good Old Tamil Folk Music.
Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan along with her husband Navaneethakrishnan has conducted several years of research and study on Tamil folk music and dances and devoted a lifetime to research, collection, revival, and documentation of ancient Tamil folk songs and dances, many of which are fast becoming obsolete.
Both Professors of Folk Arts and Culture at the Madurai Kamaraj University, the couple continue their studies on folk art and culture published various articles, given talks & even authored books on folk art.
This fast paced number is sung in praise of Mariamma. This song also has various versions & were a regular as a part of Dance festivals & Especially at School Culturals

Presenting Omkara Nadanu the famous song from the movie Sankarabharanam today with my music with coffee.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpGSPvWzHmc

Sankharabaranam (1980) {Jewel of Shiva} is an all time hit and known for its meaningful songs.

This movie brings a lot of uniqueness to this world.

- Jonnalagadda Venkata Somayajulu (1928 - 2004) is noted with his the character Shankar Sastry in the film Shankarabaranam. Somayajelu was an IAS officer and believed to be the only IAS officer who acted in films.

- S P Balasubramaniam rendered omkara (and all songs) without any classical training.

- K V Mahadevan - Composer/Music Director had M Balamuralikrishna as the playback singer. The heavy classical content of the composition made Mahadevan pick SPB to take up this challenge.

- Padmashri Dr. Kasinathuni Vishwanath who was a sound designer turned into a director also has Sankarabharanam included in CNN-IBN list of hundred greatest Indian films of all time.

The link below would show us not only the lyrics but also the meaning of the song.

Love. So much can be said about it. But it's really not possible to define it. Because it's a feeling. A feeling that should be shown and felt instead of making it a scientific explanation.

That epiphanical moment when you know you are in love with someone, that's like a freight train at full speed hitting you and throwing you out of whack. There has been this long standing deluded assumption that it's sweet torture. Nope. It's cruel medieval torture. Like put in the stocks. The good (or the worst) part is you want more of it, like a masochist.

You meet hundreds of people. Some you lust for, but some get your love. And reciprocate it. That's when you go: "I thought I'd seen everything, until I saw you!"

So my folks, here goes my favourite song from Bryan Adams' album named 11

http://youtu.be/NhOQLzYUY3w

"Tonight We Have The Stars"

We'll save ourselves a bottle
Of California red
We'll drink it on a Tuesday
Let it go straight to our heads

And we'll eat from good china
And make love on linen sheets
Just like there's no tomorrow
No surrender, no retreat

I can feel it in my bones
And I know it in my heart
Tomorrow may be rainin' but tonight we have the stars
We may always be together
Or miles and miles apart
Tomorrow may be rainin' but tonight we have the stars

We were young and we were foolish
We were easy to deceive
Said we'd be in love forever
And it was easy to believe

Well you and I we had our moments
Our devils and our doubts
But the time we spend together
We gotta make it count

This is my dedication on Valentines day to all you wonderful folks who are very LOVEABLE! Make sure the time you spend together counts! Enjoy your day! Have a blast!

(PS: listen to the song with a great audio system with a sub woofer, preferably in a car at night. Gasting your flabber music. Or you can join me in my car.)

The other song below is also a nice one

So many days of MWC; so many songs; so many varied genres, emotions, languages. Yet, the essence of all these different tunes at the root level is the same. It's mindboggling to think that every piece of music in existence is made up of only 7 simple notes. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni / Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti / A B C D E F G

Within the 7 notes, so many songs!
Simple. And this is the translation of the first line of today's song.

Vani Jayaram won the national award as best female playback singer for this hauntingly beautiful ragamalika. The main raga in the song is Pantuvarali and the other three ragas are : Sivaranjani, Sindhubhairavi and Kambhoji.

Dancing elegantly in the composition of maestro MSV, the words penned by the great poet, Kannadasan, who manages to describe the essence of life in a nutshell... in just 4 paras... Featured in the movie Apoorva Ragangal directed by the one and only KB,

Yezhu swarangalukkul etthanai paadal

[Lyrics & translation source :

Yezhu swarangalukkul, ethanai paadal
Idhaya surangathul ethanai kelvi
Kaanum manidharukkul ethanai salanam
Verum karpanai sandoshathil avanadhu gavanam

(How many songs in seven notes
How many questions in the tunnel that’s one’s heart?
How many disturbances in the people you see?
In empty imaginary pleasures lies his attention

Aarambathil pirappum un kayil illai
Pinbu aduthaduthu nadakkum, un kayil illai
Paadhai vagutha pinbu bayanddhenna laabam
Adhil payanam nadhi vidu, maraindhidum paavam

In the beginning, birth isn’t in your hands
Then one thing happens after another, that’s not in your hands either
Once you’ve decided on a path, what’s the point in getting scared
Walk that path and the sins will disappear

Yenakkaga nee azhalam iyarkail nadakkum
Nee enakkaga unavu unna eppadi nadakkum?
Namakendru boomiyile kadamaigal undu
Adhai namakkaga nam kayyal seivadhu nandru

You can cry on my behalf, it’s possible (in nature)
How can you eat for me?
We all have our duties to perform
It is best if we do them ourselves

Naalai pozhudhondru undu adhu namakkena vaazhgha
Adhai nadatha oruvanundu koilil kanga
Velai pirakkum endru nambikkai kolga
Endha vedhanayummaarum megathai pole

There’s tomorrow, live in the belief that it’s for us,
There’s someone to guide it, find Him in the temple
Believe that your time will come
Because every sorrow is like the shifting clouds

Yesterday is history; Tomorrow is mystery;
Today is a gift; that's why it is called 'Present'
- Master Oogway, The Kungfu Panda

Have a wonderful weekend, ya'll!

Today we go crazy foot tapping to a wonderful Broadway musical. Footloose is a 1998 musical based on the 1984 film of the same name.

This used to be the most circulated around in the IT circles. Every line of Act1, a techie can perfectly relate to. The hero's move to a new place, the excitement, the yearning to get backto familiar zone, the aaaaargh feeling, the moment when he asks himself "Did I do the right thing?"

Footloose uses a pit orchestra in a rock combo style. The movie was nominated for four Tony Awards

Hope you enjoy this funny Broadway musical add much as we techies did in our heydays.
Have a great evening, folks!

Footloose
Broadway musical

Been working so hard
I'm punching my card
Eight hours, for what?
Oh, tell me what I got

Chuck, Lyle & Travis:
Been working so hard
I'm punching my card
Eight hours, for what?

Others:
For what?...

Wendy Jo:
Been working too damn hard
I'm punching that same card
Eight hours of bustin' my butt
Oh, tell me what I got

All:
I got this feeling
that time's just holding me down

Ren & Urleen:
I hate this feeling
time is holding me down
All: **Chorus**
I'll hit the ceiling
or else I'll tear up this town
Tonight I gotta cut loose
Footloose
Kick off your Sunday shoes
Please, Louise
Pull me offa my knees
Jack, get back
C'mon, before we crack
Lose your blues
Everybody cut Footloose

Rusty, Wendy Jo & Urleen:
You're playing so cool
Obeying every rule
Dig way down in your heart
You're burning yearning for some

All:
Somebody to tell you
That life ain't passing you by
Rusty, Wendy Jo & Urleen
Life ain't passin' me by

All:
I'm trying to tell you
It will if you don't even try
You can fly

Ren:
If you'd only cut loose
All:
Cut Footloose

First! We've got to turn you around
Second! Then put your feet on the ground
Third! Now take ahold of your soul!
Life keeps holding me down
Everybody cut everybody cut...
The scene shifts to Beamont..

Choir:
On any Sunday here we'll be
Raising our voices in harmony
One day once our trials have ceased
We will be released

Shaw:
On any Sunday, Lord, I pray
Tell me exactly the words to say
Give me strength and maybe then
I can reach my fellow men
So we all may rise again
Thank you, Lord, Amen

Ren:
We've only been here 3 days and already
Chicago seems a million miles away
But we were barely hanging on there
'Specially with my father gone there's
Not too many places we could stay
And maybe Mom could find a job that's steady
And maybe I could stand it for a year
And maybe things won't be so bad
And maybe I won't miss my Dad
And maybe we could start a new life here

Parishoners:
Start a new life here

Ren & Ethel:
Have I done the right thing?
Picking up my life
Packing up the passt
That's always frightning
Have I done the right thing?

Parishoners:
The right thing!
The right thing!
We strive to do what's right!
The right thing!
The right thing!
Sin is a matter of black and white!

Kids:
There's rumors going 'round about the new kid
And everybody's talking til they're blue
But you know how a stranger is
If he's not dumb he's dangerous
But either way at least it's something new

Shaw, Vi & Ariel:
God is love
Follow him and never roam
He has made the stars above
Just to light your way back home
Shaw & Vi, Choir, and Ren & Ethel repeat their lines simultaneously

All:
On any Sunday morning here we'll be
Raising our voices in harmony
Gathering to join the feast
Asking naught but, Lord, at least
We pray that one day once our trials have ceased
We will be released.
