Songs are a feature of every wedding. During olden days, child marriages were common and when a child got married at 10 or 11, fun and music were introduced probably to give them a relaxing break from the rituals. In South Indian weddings,

Kasi yaathrai, exchange of garlands, couples sitting on a decorated swing, nalangu are all fun parts along with rituals of the wedding. During these weddings,

Friends and relatives either sing all the existing songs with appropriate lyrics or compose a few songs with enthusiasm and perform. These days, music is given importance and sometimes choreographed and performed. Many songs are very famous in the marriages of Hindus in the southern part of India and are sung at various stages of the marriage

One such song is Maalai Maatrinaal which friends and relatives sing while the couple exchange their garlands. It is a joy to look at the coy looks on their faces. The song describes how elated Aandal (Kothai) feels when she exchanges garland with Ranganathar, the Lord Himself, with joy and full of love. No doubt all of us have our favourite wedding songs. Share your wedding song experience here!

When all else fails, there's no better friend to turn to than yourself. One should learn to trust his own mind and find the strength within.
Today's song talks about finding the answer within yourself. Listening to that little voice inside you; which is always true to you.
A beautiful piano ballad, in the strong, mesmerising voice of Christina Aguillera,
"The Voice Within"
http://youtu.be/nA2k79EGHbc
Young girl, don't cry
I'll be right here when your world starts to fall
Young girl, it's all right
Your tears will dry, you'll soon be free to fly
When you're safe inside your room you tend to dream
Of a place where nothing's harder than it seems
No one ever wants or bothers to explain
Of the heartache life can bring and what it means
When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
If you will learn to begin
To trust the voice within
Young girl, don't hide
You'll never change if you just run away
Young girl, just hold tight
And soon you're gonna see your brighter day
Now in a world where innocence is quickly claimed
It's so hard to stand your ground when you're so afraid
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold
When you're lost outside look inside to your soul
When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
If you will learn to begin
To trust the voice within
Yeah...
Life is a journey
It can take you anywhere you choose to go
As long as you're learning
You'll find all you'll ever need to know
You'll make it
You'll make it
Just don't go forsaking yourself
No one can stop you
You know that I'm talking to you
When there's no one else
Look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend
Just trust the voice within
Then you'll find the strength
That will guide your way
If you will learn to begin
To trust the voice within
Young girl don't cry
I'll be right here when your world starts to fall

Today's song is not really a morning song. It is a soft lullaby that will rock you to sleep. But then this is a beautiful tamil song that I heard in the recent past and I wanted to share it with all of you.

Thooli or the cloth cradle that you hand from a hook in the ceiling - Do you have any memories associated with it? Well I do. I have heard lot of stories from my mom on how I used to love sleeping in the thooli. Though I do not remember any of it, I do remember rocking my sister to sleep. Usually the mom's sari is used so that it gives the baby the same warmth and feeling as sleeping on mommy's lap. Thooli does sound warm and nice, but I never used it with my kids. There were no hooks to hang the thooli and I had read enough about the risk SIDS when using thooli. I had also heard how difficult it is to wean a child away from the thooli once the child gets used to sleeping in it.

Both my mom and MIL never insisted that we use thooli for my kids. But everytime, we found it difficult to put the baby to bed and paced the room up and down, trying different tactics to put our colic baby to bed we would hear about the magic of thooli and how it could put any wailing baby to sleep.
"Oru thooli katti athula potta jammunu thoongum. Intha kalathula than etho pudusu pudusa sollara"
The concept of making the child sleep in a thooli is a thing of past. But one cannot deny the fact that these modern day cradles can never give the cosy warm feeling that a thooli gives.

This song is about a child that sleeps in a thooli hanging from a tree branch, listening to the rustling leaves. A gentle breeze rocks the cradle. This song is specially for all those who find it difficult to sleep. Just play this song and go to your dreamland. I wish this song was a bit longer!

Like a typical tambrahm girl I grew up listening to music and dutifully learning some !!!! As the rebellion me set in, my music was what was the flavour of that time smile emoticon My tryst with music , songs n sound started the day I got married ...... A few days into it n we had this huge accident which had us immobile fr a few months n this is when I fell in love!! With music :)) Anand took me into a world of ballads, metal , classical n the stories attached to each song ....Led me to a totally different plane in music..... It was exciting the riffs, beats n words

I present my favourite track from this movie Dead man walking where Eddie Vedder ( the lead singer for Pearl Jam) had jammed with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to create magic !!!!

Soundtrack: Dead Man Walking

Title: Long Road (Eddie Vedder With Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCdbk3Upg7s

And I wished for so long, cannot stay...
All the precious moments, cannot stay...
It's not like wings have fallen, cannot stay...
But I feel something's missing, cannot say...
Holding hands are daughters and sons
And their faiths just falling down, down, down, down...
I have wished for so long
How I wish for you today
We all walk the long road. Cannot stay...
There's no need to say goodbye...
All the friends and family
All the memories going round, round, round, round
I have wished for so long
How I wish for you today
And the wind keeps roaring
And the sky keeps turning gray
And the sun is set
The sun will rise another day...
We all walk the long road. Cannot stay...
There's no need to say goodbye...
All the friends and family
All the memories going round, round, round, round
I have wished for so long
How I wish for you today
How I've wished for so long
How I wish for you today
We all walk the long road (--3x--)

When the little baby takes those first few steps alone, leaving the parental protective hands, it is a joy, a celebration. But as we grow up, we sometimes forget to 'walk alone' and look for more protective hands.
The great poet Rabindranath Tagore said

Walk Alone,

"If they answer not to your call walk alone
If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall,

O thou unlucky one,
open your mind and speak out alone.
If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness,

O thou unlucky one,
trample the thorns under thy tread,
and along the blood-lined track travel alone.
If they shut doors and do not hold up the light when the night is troubled with storm,

O thou unlucky one,
with the thunder flame of pain ignite your own heart,
and let it burn alone"

This is a very famous Bengali patriotic song 'Ekla Chalo re' written by Tagore in 1905 and was used in Indian freedom movement. It is also a favorite song of Mahatma Gandhi. We all would have heard this in many voices from Kishore Kumar to Amitabh Bachan to Shreya Goshal, but I'm sharing this song from one of my favorite band 'Swarathma'. This song also features a Baul musician Lakhan Das Baul.
(There needs to be a separate post on Baul musicians. Read if interested: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baul)

Notice in the video, he is playing an instrument called 'Dotara' used by Baul musicians (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dotara)

We need to remember to walk alone and fight our own battles, no matter what.

A capella means singing with any musical instrument accompaniments. This type of singing was originally practiced in churches and musical pieces were written specifically for such performances.
Now we have numerous Acapella groups that sign a variety of songs.

The pick for the day is an Acapella group called Penn Masala, the world’s first hindi Acapella group. The group was formed almost 2 decades ago by students of University of Pennsylvania, who wanted to represent South Asian music through Acapella. The link below is their tribute to Hindi cinema from the 1940 to 2013/14.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

My Debut here at MWC and I'm honoured. With the class quality of music i hear at MWC, i was a little apprehensive at first and now my 2 and a half year old son is humming this particular track throughout the day and i know what i want to put up here. We play Thaikkudam tracks almost every morning at our home and this particular one 'HAQ ALLAH' is our favourite among many others.

This band has 19 members, Kerala based, founded by cousins Govind Menon & Siddarth Menon. They perform in various genres.

FYI, This song is originally taken from a 2008 film called Black and White starring Anil Kapoor, Shefali Chayya, etc.. and the music is by Sukhwinder Singh also sung by him and Hans raj Hans.
Sip on that Kaapi, tap your feet and get that adrenaline going for the day with this track :-)

(I'm posting this tonight itself, i have crazy long day 2mrw!!!)

Presenting yet another foot tapping number by Shubha Mudgal.
For your knowledge ,Shubha Mudgal grew up in Allahabad , India and initially dabbled with Kathak dance before taking Talim of classical music at the age of 16 at the insistence of her mother who exposed her to all kinds of music.
I remember, way back in the early 90's when ''Ali More Angana'' song became a big hit or rather what I call it a foot stomping number.. It became a chart-buster overnight and shot her to instant stardom. Here, she has shown her perpetual vocal magic in this sufi genre song.
Sing along-
Ali more angna daras dikha dum ali more angna daras dikha
Ishq mein tere jogan ban gayi (2)
Dil mera dole, eee heyy eyyeee
Cham cham bole payaliya mori payaliya re
Ali more angna daras dikha dum ali more angna daras dikha

One the occasion of Maha Shivarathiri, i share with you a song from the movie nAn Kadavul. Vaali's lyrics and Illayaraja's music help to make the song, in Vijay Prakash's voice, one of the most philosophical and powerful in recent times. Arthur C Wilson's camera and the way he portrays kaasi deserves special mention and a sample can be seen in this song.

http://youtu.be/oU3gr05cvzM

Note: This song forms the crux of Sri Rudhra, a powerful set of hymns about Lord Siva, present in the Yajur vedha. There is a famous theory about Sri Rudhra given by the paramaacharya of kanchi, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya swami. Generally Vedhas are referred as 3 (trayee Veda). The Yajur Veda is in the middle. If we check what’s found in the middle of Yajur Veda, it’s the Rudhra hymns. They are present in the fourth chapter of the total seven chapters. If we further ponder in to what’s found in the middle of Rudhra, it’s the Name of lord Siva – famously called Siva Panchakshari (the 5 letters – Om nama Sivaya – in Sanskrit – given in the last line of the above present manthras). Hence, the hymns are very pious and should be treated with respect.

without much ado, the song 'Om sivoham Om sivoham, rudra nAmam bhajE' from the movie nAn kadavul. I have given below the lyrics and the meaning too

When Haripriya Sabasivam posted “Surangani” A few days back, the other one that immediately came to my mind was this peppy tamil folk song. Those were the days of DD and this lady was one of the most prominent faces and still remains the Pioneer of Good Old Tamil Folk Music.
Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan along with her husband Navaneethakrishnan has conducted several years of research and study on Tamil folk music and dances and devoted a lifetime to research, collection, revival, and documentation of ancient Tamil folk songs and dances, many of which are fast becoming obsolete.
Both Professors of Folk Arts and Culture at the Madurai Kamaraj University, the couple continue their studies on folk art and culture published various articles, given talks & even authored books on folk art.
This fast paced number is sung in praise of Mariamma. This song also has various versions & were a regular as a part of Dance festivals & Especially at School Culturals

Presenting Omkara Nadanu the famous song from the movie Sankarabharanam today with my music with coffee.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpGSPvWzHmc

Sankharabaranam (1980) {Jewel of Shiva} is an all time hit and known for its meaningful songs.

This movie brings a lot of uniqueness to this world.

- Jonnalagadda Venkata Somayajulu (1928 - 2004) is noted with his the character Shankar Sastry in the film Shankarabaranam. Somayajelu was an IAS officer and believed to be the only IAS officer who acted in films.

- S P Balasubramaniam rendered omkara (and all songs) without any classical training.

- K V Mahadevan - Composer/Music Director had M Balamuralikrishna as the playback singer. The heavy classical content of the composition made Mahadevan pick SPB to take up this challenge.

- Padmashri Dr. Kasinathuni Vishwanath who was a sound designer turned into a director also has Sankarabharanam included in CNN-IBN list of hundred greatest Indian films of all time.

The link below would show us not only the lyrics but also the meaning of the song.

Love. So much can be said about it. But it's really not possible to define it. Because it's a feeling. A feeling that should be shown and felt instead of making it a scientific explanation.

That epiphanical moment when you know you are in love with someone, that's like a freight train at full speed hitting you and throwing you out of whack. There has been this long standing deluded assumption that it's sweet torture. Nope. It's cruel medieval torture. Like put in the stocks. The good (or the worst) part is you want more of it, like a masochist.

You meet hundreds of people. Some you lust for, but some get your love. And reciprocate it. That's when you go: "I thought I'd seen everything, until I saw you!"

So my folks, here goes my favourite song from Bryan Adams' album named 11

http://youtu.be/NhOQLzYUY3w

"Tonight We Have The Stars"

We'll save ourselves a bottle
Of California red
We'll drink it on a Tuesday
Let it go straight to our heads

And we'll eat from good china
And make love on linen sheets
Just like there's no tomorrow
No surrender, no retreat

I can feel it in my bones
And I know it in my heart
Tomorrow may be rainin' but tonight we have the stars
We may always be together
Or miles and miles apart
Tomorrow may be rainin' but tonight we have the stars

We were young and we were foolish
We were easy to deceive
Said we'd be in love forever
And it was easy to believe

Well you and I we had our moments
Our devils and our doubts
But the time we spend together
We gotta make it count

This is my dedication on Valentines day to all you wonderful folks who are very LOVEABLE! Make sure the time you spend together counts! Enjoy your day! Have a blast!

(PS: listen to the song with a great audio system with a sub woofer, preferably in a car at night. Gasting your flabber music. Or you can join me in my car.)

The other song below is also a nice one

So many days of MWC; so many songs; so many varied genres, emotions, languages. Yet, the essence of all these different tunes at the root level is the same. It's mindboggling to think that every piece of music in existence is made up of only 7 simple notes. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni / Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti / A B C D E F G

Within the 7 notes, so many songs!
Simple. And this is the translation of the first line of today's song.

Vani Jayaram won the national award as best female playback singer for this hauntingly beautiful ragamalika. The main raga in the song is Pantuvarali and the other three ragas are : Sivaranjani, Sindhubhairavi and Kambhoji.

Dancing elegantly in the composition of maestro MSV, the words penned by the great poet, Kannadasan, who manages to describe the essence of life in a nutshell... in just 4 paras... Featured in the movie Apoorva Ragangal directed by the one and only KB,

Yezhu swarangalukkul, ethanai paadal
Idhaya surangathul ethanai kelvi
Kaanum manidharukkul ethanai salanam

(How many songs in seven notes
How many questions in the tunnel that’s one’s heart?
How many disturbances in the people you see?
In empty imaginary pleasures lies his attention

Aarambathil pirappum un kayil illai
Pinbu aduthaduthu nadakkum, un kayil illai
Paadhai vagutha pinbu bayanddhenna laabam
Adhil payanam nadhi vidu, maraindhidum paavam

In the beginning, birth isn’t in your hands
Then one thing happens after another, that’s not in your hands either
Once you’ve decided on a path, what’s the point in getting scared
Walk that path and the sins will disappear

Yenakkaga nee azhalam iyarkail nadakkum
Nee enakkaga unavu unna eppadi nadakkum?
Namakendru boomiyile kadamaigal undu
Adhai namakkaga nam kayyal seivadhu nandru

You can cry on my behalf, it’s possible (in nature)
How can you eat for me?
We all have our duties to perform
It is best if we do them ourselves

Naalai pozhudhondru undu adhu namakkena vaazhgha
Adhai nadatha oruvanundu koilil kanga
Velai pirakkum endru nambikkai kolga
Endha vedhanayummaarum megathai pole

There’s tomorrow, live in the belief that it’s for us,
There’s someone to guide it, find Him in the temple
Believe that your time will come
Because every sorrow is like the shifting clouds

Yesterday is history; Tomorrow is mystery;
Today is a gift; that's why it is called 'Present'

Today we go crazy foot tapping to a wonderful Broadway musical. Footloose is a 1998 musical based on the 1984 film of the same name.

This used to be the most circulated around in the IT circles. Every line of Act1, a techie can perfectly relate to. The hero's move to a new place, the excitement, the yearning to get backto familiar zone, the aaaaargh feeling, the moment when he asks himself "Did I do the right thing?"

Footloose uses a pit orchestra in a rock combo style. The movie was nominated for four Tony Awards

Hope you enjoy this funny Broadway musical add much as we techies did in our heydays.
Have a great evening, folks!

Eight hours, for what?
Oh, tell me what I got

Chuck, Lyle & Travis:
Been working so hard
I'm punching my card
Eight hours, for what?

Others:
For what?...

Wendy Jo:
Been working too damn hard
I'm punching that same card
Eight hours of bustin' my butt
Oh, tell me what I got

All:
I got this feeling
that time's just holding me down

Ren & Urleen:
I hate this feeling
time is holding me down
All: **Chorus**
I'll hit the ceiling
or else I'll tear up this town
Tonight I gotta cut loose
Footloose
Kick off your Sunday shoes
Please, Louise
Pull me offa my knees
Jack, get back
C'mon, before we crack
Lose your blues
Everybody cut Footloose

Rusty, Wendy Jo & Urleen:
You're playing so cool
Obeying every rule
Dig way down in your heart
You're burning yearning for some

All:
Somebody to tell you
That life ain't passing you by
Rusty, Wendy Jo & Urleen
Life ain't passin' me by

All:
I'm trying to tell you
It will if you don't even try
You can fly

Ren:
If you'd only cut loose
All:
Cut Footloose

First! We've got to turn you around
Second! Then put your feet on the ground
Third! Now take ahold of your soul!
Life keeps holding me down
Everybody cut everybody cut...
The scene shifts to Beamont..

Choir:
On any Sunday here we'll be
Raising our voices in harmony
One day once our trials have ceased
We will be released

Shaw:
On any Sunday, Lord, I pray
Tell me exactly the words to say
Give me strength and maybe then
I can reach my fellow men
So we all may rise again
Thank you, Lord, Amen

Ren:
We've only been here 3 days and already
Chicago seems a million miles away
But we were barely hanging on there
'Specially with my father gone there's
Not too many places we could stay
And maybe Mom could find a job that's steady
And maybe I could stand it for a year
And maybe things won't be so bad
And maybe I won't miss my Dad
And maybe we could start a new life here

Parishoners:
Start a new life here

Ren & Ethel:
Have I done the right thing?
Picking up my life
Packing up the passt
That's always frightning
Have I done the right thing?

Parishoners:
The right thing!
The right thing!
We strive to do what's right!
The right thing!
The right thing!
Sin is a matter of black and white!

Kids:
There's rumors going 'round about the new kid
And everybody's talking til they're blue
But you know how a stranger is
If he's not dumb he's dangerous
But either way at least it's something new

Shaw, Vi & Ariel:
God is love
Follow him and never roam
He has made the stars above
Just to light your way back home
Shaw & Vi, Choir, and Ren & Ethel repeat their lines simultaneously

All:
On any Sunday morning here we'll be
Raising our voices in harmony
Gathering to join the feast
Asking naught but, Lord, at least
We pray that one day once our trials have ceased
We will be released.
