When Haripriya Sabasivam posted “Surangani” A few days back, the other one that immediately came to my mind was this peppy tamil folk song. Those were the days of DD and this lady was one of the most prominent faces and still remains the Pioneer of Good Old Tamil Folk Music.
Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan along with her husband Navaneethakrishnan has conducted several years of research and study on Tamil folk music and dances and devoted a lifetime to research, collection, revival, and documentation of ancient Tamil folk songs and dances, many of which are fast becoming obsolete.
Both Professors of Folk Arts and Culture at the Madurai Kamaraj University, the couple continue their studies on folk art and culture published various articles, given talks & even authored books on folk art.
This fast paced number is sung in praise of Mariamma. This song also has various versions & were a regular as a part of Dance festivals & Especially at School Culturals

"Agaval" is the form of blank verse, close to speech. The Vinayagar agaval is chanted on Lord Ganesha, was written by tamil poetess Avaiyar. Considered to be her greatest composition and in comparison one of the best sacred poems ever, this was sung in the 14th Century during the golden era of the Cholas. This composition consists of esoteric values and meaning of our existence and the knowledge one has to seek in his/her life time.

Vinayagar Agaval defines a religious path, its application as a spiritual tool begins during concentration on a physical image of Ganesh with the use of the Agaval's description of spiritual belief and practice, and aspects of the teachings on human life attributed to the deity. It is also known to have given the complete shastras on Yoga. 
The Agaval speaks to us on many levels. Written at the culmination of her life, this, Auvaiyar’s last work, speaks to us of an old woman’s readiness for death. Yet it speaks with gratitude and wonder of the poetess’s journey through life, seen as a gift from the God, testifying to the completeness of the poetess’s human experience. Simultaneously it celebrates a new birth, her emergence from the womb of the God who holds the material universe in his belly. She speaks explicitly of her new immortality, of her experience of her real state, of Siva within the eternal sound, of bliss at the boundary of darkness and light. Although the individual may die, the soul having merged with the cosmos does not. Interleaved within the poem is the presence of Vinayaka, the breath taking God of new beginnings. 
A poem with very deep insight & thought, it is widely believed that reciting the Vinayagar Agaval every day, one will realize his true potential.

Marking the Month of Makaram & Celebrating 50 years of the Legend Shri. K J Yesudas, Today I present his most famous rendition of “Harivarasanam”, that has always remained an all-time favorite. This song is a finale in all his concerts, by popular demand. The song composed in the ashtakam metre was written by Kambangudi Kulathur Srinivasa Iyer and it was Swami Vimochanananda who sang in his beautiful voice and popularized Harivarasanam by travelling throughout the South India.
Also known as the Hari Haratmaka Ashtakam, it is sung when the sanctum sanctorum of the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple close for the day at night
Sabarimala opens during the pilgrimage season (November to January) and also on the first day of every Malayalam Era. VR Gopala Menon, from Alapuzha used to accompany Thirumeni Eashwaran Namboothiri, the Melshanthi (head priest), to Sannidhanam every time, and would stay there by himself even when the temple was closed, remaining undisturbed by the wild animals. Later, when Devaswom Board was formed, it is believed that he was asked to move out. He eventually died at a tea estate at Vandiperiyar.
Gopala Menon used to recite "Harivarasanam" with devotion during his time at Sannidhanam, and when Thirumeni Eashwaran Namboothiri heard about the passing away of the Mr. Menon, he was deeply saddened. At the end of the day's rituals, the Namboothiri was about to close the doors of the Sannidhanam when he remembered the dedication and sacrifice of the Gopala Menon and he then began to recite "Harivarasanam"' starting a nostalgic tradition that remains unbroken till date.
Today, as the final verses are being sung, all the assistant Santhis (priests) leave the Sreekovil one by one. As the song ends, only the Melsanthi is inside. He extinguishes the lamps one at a time and closes the doors for the night.

With the today's edition of MWC handed over to me, the first song that came to my mind was this Epic Number by the Genius A R Rahman. I also did realize that he has not been covered in this series at all!

Giving a whole new meaning to 'World Music', ARR has come up with this brilliant Traditional Buddhist & Jordanian Composition featuring Jordanian singer --Farah Siraj along with Nepalese Buddhist Nun Ani Choying. Farah Siraj is a Jordanian vocalist who has performed at some of the prestigious world platforms. Ani Choying Drolma is a Buddhist nun from Nepal is known for bringing many Tibetan Buddhist chants and feast songs to mainstream audiences.

Motherhood, Compassion & Happiness being the theme of this simple song, it has been brilliantly put together by some mind blowing music. Starting with the traditional Nepalese Buddhist hymn as the base, it takes many twists & turns from there bringing together diverse cultures and musical genres. Along with these talented ladies, the blend of lovely background vocals, the brilliant bassist, Prasanna's guitar & Sivamani's percussion, it takes you through many musical moods and styles thus creating some amazing fusion.

The Hindi Lyrics have been penned by Prasoon Joshi. This was the first track of Coke Studio-Season 3 which had some more brilliant compositions. I hope you guys enjoy as much as I did! Infact, My lil one simply loves this number.
