February 17_RJ

One the occasion of Maha Shivarathiri, i share with you a song from the movie nAn Kadavul. Vaali's lyrics and Illayaraja's music help to make the song, in Vijay Prakash's voice, one of the most philosophical and powerful in recent times. Arthur C Wilson's camera and the way he portrays kaasi deserves special mention and a sample can be seen in this song.

Note: This song forms the crux of Sri Rudhra, a powerful set of hymns about Lord Siva, present in the Yajur vedha. There is a famous theory about Sri Rudhra given by the paramaacharya of kanchi, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya swami. Generally Vedhas are referred as 3 (trayee Veda). The Yajur Veda is in the middle. If we check what’s found in the middle of Yajur Veda, it’s the Rudhra hymns. They are present in the fourth chapter of the total seven chapters. If we further ponder in to what’s found in the middle of Rudhra, it’s the Name of lord Siva – famously called Siva Panchakshari (the 5 letters – Om nama Sivaya – in Sanskrit – given in the last line of the above present manthras). Hence, the hymns are very pious and should be treated with respect.

without much ado, the song 'Om sivoham Om sivoham, rudra nAmam bhajE' from the movie nAn kadavul. I have given below the lyrics and the meaning too

"Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common."
This mesmerising 15min piece is a melodious medley of 4 different instruments, the star being the Sitar. Played brilliantly by the ravishing Anoushka Shankar (dau of PanditRaviShankar)
The violin, shehnai & mridangam come together beautifully with the sitar, leaving one yearning for a little more.
An exquisite Hindustani raga, Jog, with no Carnatic equivalent. It bears the closest resemblance to Gambheera Naattai. The raga conveys love with a pinch of sorrow.
Pramadavanam Veendum (His Highness Abdulla), KJY & Lalettan doing complete justice.

Iru hrudhayandal (oru may maasa pulariyil), KJY & Raja combo weaves magic

Bhairav is a Hindustani raga. it is considered the adi ( or the first) ragam and believed to have originated from the dhumru of Shiva. The carnatic equivalent is called MayamalavaGowla. Originally known as malavagowla, "maya" was prefixed to it after the advent of the scheme of the 72 melas. This auspicious raga evokes śānta(peace) rasa and pathos. It creates a soothing effect Suitable to sing at all times, particularly, the first dawn of the day.

It is commonly used for beginners lessons, since it has a uniform distance between relative position of notes and has symmetry, and hence easier to learn. There are many popular compositions in this ragam, but thyagaraja's Tulasī Daḻamulacē Saṃtōṣamuga continues to top that list.

In today's MWC, we look at a fusion representation of the ragam. This is from a album called 'How to Name it' and composed by Ilaiyaraja.

Here is a vocal rendition of the song from the Telugu movie Rudraveena, sung by K.J.Yesudas.

Magic happens not only when David Copperfield gets on stage. Magic happens even when Illayaraja composes. I have said the name..do I need to write anything more? Or is it even possible to write about him and try to fit his accomplishments in this small MWC post? I once saw Mysskin (director, his latest movie being Pisasu) talk about Illayaraja. I though how can someone be so insanely in love with a composer!!! But I also knew that he was probably one of the millions of fans who feel so deeply about him, about his music.
Today we are going to hear his latest composition. This is the first time he has composed for a classical dance drama. It is sung by Abhishek Raghuram. The song is from Sundarar's Thevaram. The violin prelude to Ezhisaiyai is just mesmerizing. This is my pick from the album Swapnam. But do listen to the other songs too. The album is worth a buy.
